* Controversy regarding dehydration symptoms
There is still a great amount of debate around how much water we need. I ran across an article that you could read here
Regrettably, the article featured several opinions from “experts” which are simply not true.
Here’s an example. Stanley Goldfarb (Professor of medicine, University of Pennsylvania) observed, “Since we have a perfectly good system to alert us if we need water, why would you need to subvert that by drinking in a prophylactic way?”
What Dr. Goldfarb does not seem to understand is that our thirst sensation is not perfect. We often don’t feel thirsty even though we lose lots of fluids. An example of this is seniors who progressively lose the sensation of thirst oftentimes leading to serious dehydration.
Anecdotes surrounding symptoms of dehydration are quite common.
For example, Jose Pagan, a baseball player for the N.Y. Mets was feeling excessive fatigue over several weeks. This alarmed the Met coaching staf who ordered rest and a full medical workup.
After all those tests, what was the Met player found to be suffering from? Simple dehydration.
5/26/11 – It’s simple. Follow this advice for good health. Drink the best quality water available to you and drink 7 – 9 eight-ounce glasses every day, preferably on an empty stomach. Drink more if you are heavier or work out more especially in warm weather.
